The British copyright legislation gave birth to The Admirable Bashville. According to current law, the first person to put together a stage adaptation of a book, no matter how ridiculous and worthless it may be, and read it aloud to another confederate who has purchased admission in a venue approved for theatrical performances, secures the stage rights of that book, even against the author himself. The author must buy him out before he can touch his own work for the stage. As a good Socialist, I have no objections to the restriction of my right to property in my own works for a relatively short period of time, followed by complete Communism; in fact, I cannot see why the same beneficial limitation should not apply to all property rights; however, a system that allows any alert sharper to acquire property rights in my stories as against myself and the rest of the community would, in my opinion, justify a rebellion if authors were given no protection.
